However, the most intersting thing was that half the audience (aged largely under 25) were what's known as Cosplayers. Sounding very old here. They dress up as the characters from their favourite games and films. Mostly these were from japanese animation, but ther were Dr Whos, Daleks, Power Rangers, some steampunkers too. There were probably as many girls as boys: computer games have historically been a nerdy boys domain - not here, there is romance and realistic female heroines. And it was quite racially diverse. Think you might be gay/lesbian/bi/trans? fine, dress up as who you want, girl or boy. The characters are all very androgenous anyway. It made me think of the Bowie boys (and girls) of the early 70s, and the punks; but there was no snarling political apathy or disaffection, just teenage hormones overflowing and complete conformity and compliance to their media-worship. These kids don't know what rebellion is. Needlesss to say, my boy wants to be a Cosplayer too next time... I have to thank him for getting me into Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Watchmen etc) just by being in the same environment.

But please, no more 'Free Hugs'.

Glenn Brown paintings reproducing old masters at Gagosian Gallery, Britannia Street until 26 Nov.
Over the years Paul has been working privately on a number of film opportunities as director, writer and cameraman, as well as being commissioned for band videos and a variety of other local projects.

“Joe Fury and the Hard Death” however is Paul’s debut novel and I am pleased to announce is being released by www.frontlistbooks.co.uk - the advance copies are already receiving great reviews and as with all worthy releases has been advertised for sale prior to the release date at reputable stockist such as Amazon and Waterstone’s.

So what can you expect from this read, well Joe Fury is a private eye taking on a troublesome case involving the fantastically named “Sisters of the Immaculate Immolation” (how can you possibly go wrong with a story involving Nuns with guns!)… But that’s not all, thriving on a whole host of alternative realities and well thought out characters, such Preston the double crossing cross dresser, this is bound to capture your imagination and have you in comedy stitches.

If you wish to find out what goes on in Paul’s mind in order to concoct such a story he will be attending book signings/readings at the following venues:

Red Lion Books Colchester – 11th Sept, 7pm til 10pm

Waterstone’s Portsmouth – 3rd Oct, 12pm til 3pm

Alternatively, follow the below links and purchase yourself a copy:

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get round to writing a review - but then again, I can’t believe it’s taken AC/DC the last 9 years to release a new studio album, plus the 9 years (except the Hammersmith gig) to play the UK again.

By the time the Black Ice album was due to be released, I have to say I was a bit apprehensive, worried that it wasn’t going to live up to expectations and that I’d listen to it a couple of times before reverting back to the old days… What they have however released in my opinion is an amazing instant classic of an album (I’m not biased honest – the songs, the production, awesome), so how excited was I when an old work friend managed to get hold of those much sort after tickets.

Upon arrival, we couldn’t believe how impressive the stadium is and the atmosphere outside was buzzing with Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and such like filling the air through the outside speakers.

Support slot came from the Subways, who were actually pretty damn good although despite trying hard were never going to get the whole of Wembley to clap along… unlike DC.

So here we go, and to up on the main screens was a cartoon animation of an Angus devil driving a train whilst being distracted by two seductive ladies. The train gradually sounding faster and faster, before getting out of control and a real locomotive crashing through the back of the stage as the band burst on to “Rock n Roll Train” – one of 5 songs tonight taken from the new album.

The amount of new songs meant not too many surprises in terms of set list, although I was chuffed to see “Shot Down in Flames” wasn’t dropped for the tour. “Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to be” sounded awesome, as did the closely followed “Back in Black”.

It was when the sun went down that the show really came into it’s own though at which point the opening notes to “Thunderstruck” were met with one of the largest cheers so far of the evening. A couple of numbers later and we were into “the Jack” a song about a dirty woman… where we also got the token Angus Young striptease. There’s something a bit wrong about egging on a 54 year old man in a school uniform to strip off to his boxers, but somehow when you have over 60,000 other (mostly hairy old men) doing it everything seems perfectly normal…

There was more of course, Brian Johnston running half the length of a football field to swing from “Hells Bells” and announcing they’d brought their girlfriend with them as a huge inflatable “Whole Lotta Rosie” straddled the stage.

“You Shook me All Night Long” probably got the loudest sing along and for “Let there be Rock” Angus’ huge solo was unbelievable, making full use of the stage, the crowd hanging off every note cheering for more… and that was it…. Well, with the exception of the predictable (yet necessary!) encore.

Flames came up out the stage, shortly followed by Angus and we were on a “Highway to Hell” followed by “For those About to Rock” complete with the 21 (or rather 12) gun salute.

Then it was time for that mass exodus… had we possibly seen the rigid strong rhythm section of Maclom, Cliff and Phil, along with Geordie through n through Brian and demonic Angus, play one of their last gigs before retirement? I hope not, for amongst other reasons, this is the band that got me into music… long live rock n roll, long live DC. \oo/

Imagine an old pump organ, set at the heart of the Roundhouse,
with a series of low-tech cables and wires attached to the building's
pillars, pipes and beams. Then imagine the ping, rattle and blow as
they vibrate and resonate in response to the organ keys, and the
building itself becomes a giant musical instrument. Playing the Building,
David Byrne's interactive sound installation, drew crowds to New
York's Battery Maritime Building last year. This August sees the UK
premiere of his vision of 'Victorian steam-punk technology' at the
160-year-old Roundhouse.

The shutters will be off the windows of the domed roof, revealing
the building in a new light — the perfect setting for visitors of all
ages to explore the Victorian architecture and have the chance
to 'play the building'. Bring your instrument to JamAlongs on
Thursdays 13, 20, 27 and take part in a unique musical experience.

I bet the DVD is great, and it was only £2.99 in the sale! Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers: again, best work in years, Richie's lyrics return us to Holy Bible territory, the quick recordings retain an immediacy lacking from recent efforts. It got me to look back at the 'forgotten' works with new interest.

The Kasabian single 'Fire' is a great new track and it has got me wondering whether any of their earlier stuff is any good. Dave played me a remix track when I was down in Pompey at the weekend; but we both confessed to being completely oblivious to them, having written them off as another posturing post-Oasis act. I caught a little bit of Radio 1 in the car this morning and Chris Moyles was kind of saying the same, so perhaps this album is particularly different.

For any of you with any interest in the Sanguinearts project White Cliff Sands, we exchanged some of the now-almost-complete demos. There is still another tape of recordings to work on, but there have also been some developments towards the art direction, with images and titles being proposed. Sorry it's only taken2 years...

A bit late, but Kevin Blechdom has released a new record called Gentlemania. Surprisingly its an acoustic record, and although still a mixed up bag of styles, this shows a more gentle side then the schizophrenic electronica we know her for.
http://www.myspace.com/kevinblechdom

You've just got time to see Annette Mesenger's show at the Hayward before it closes next week.
So here we are… the day after the night before. I’m pleased to say that last night saw the return of Spiral Architects, playing at the Fawcett Inn as part of another successful Junkyard Show.

Having only had the one band camp in the lead up to our first Spiral performance in a while (the last being a Junkyard show at the Barn) it has to be said that the gig went seemingly well. We played our set around 5.30pm, ommitting "108" and "the new one" and had some top comments which is nice… and I even had a table. So yeah a set which took the crowd on a journey through pyschadelic tendancies, the way we know and love...

Rolling back a couple of hours before us were the acoustic duo of Bemis followed by some rather impressive tribal drumming courtesy of DrumNation. Later in the evening were the live instrumentation and hip hop flavours of Jack Presto ( www.myspace.com/jackpresto ) , and a bit later our hosts Cool Banana ( www.coolbanana.com ). The afternoon/evening also provided some top Dubstep tunes from DJs Wobble and Squeak (which includes our very own Spiral Mitz) and other DJ’s providing Trance and such like… Plus hats off to Spiral Nick for also managing to pop round the corner to play in his third band of the day, Self Inflicted.

There’s also talk of a Spiral gig the end of June, which unfortunately I personally won’t be able to play as I will be seeing Neil Young at London’s Hard Rock Calling… can’t believe I may miss my own gig but there you go… Also, elsewhere on these pages you will see Spiral Architects are playing a mile out to sea on Spitbank Fort! Check out details here: www.thecoalitionfestival.com and tickets now on sale.

HAUSCHKA and SPACESHIPP

Last week I took a trip up to London to see Jason Spaceman from Spiritualized perform with Matthew Shipp, in what was an hour and 15 minutes of one continual drone piece. I think London’s Southbank is probably one of a limited amount of venues where they could get away with this… basically the sound was immense, with Spaceman hammering away at pretty much the same chord whilst Shipp played Celeste/Organ.

Initially I thought the sound man somehow managed to get the balance of the two on stage wrong, but soon enough I realised Shipp was basically playing the same keys and the barrage of noise was indeed coming from both organ and guitar. There was a definite element of art for arts sake, and people were walking out… part of me can’t blame them, it was pretty unbearable after a while! With minimal change in notes and played at quite a volume - you did find yourself getting lost in the sound at times drifting in and out of enjoyment, amazement, appreciation, dislike and despair… Then after about an hour it changed for a bit before the pair stood up, bowed, and walked off stage. It was all well and good if you like that kind of thing but after a while it was a bit “ok lads, a jokes a joke, we get the idea…”

This though, was preceded by German pianist/composer Hauschka, which in a complete contrast to what followed was absolutely beautiful. I can’t explain enough how I loved it. Playing semi-classical pieces with his grand prepared piano, consisting of random objects under the strings – wood, metal, bells and such like.

He was also happy to chat, explaining how one piece was written about water because there was a particular swimming pool he enjoyed as a child another was written specifically for the gig as he enjoyed London so much. At one point he’d written himself out of a composition so he could sit back and watch the string quartet that had been accompanying him throughout.

Hauschka’s set then ended on a piece where he gradually removed the objects from his piano, before pouring a handful of ping pong balls inside to bounce around… it was the great and perfect balance of amazing beautifully crafted music with the slightly experimental… Oh and did I mention I loved it?

Well that’s all folks, two blog entries for the price of one.

Now they're all over 6Music and the broadsheet press, and their album is out now on Rough Trade, so check it out! When we saw her she was playing a modified toy guitar, and she also has an amplified CD rack (we won't spoil things by saying Mr Teeth has been doing that for about 5 years).
Some other things I've picked up from said radio station include:
Tim Exile: dj and 'tweaked out' electronic musician, not sure what track it was, but possibly Su Doku Wars from his 2006 Nuisance Gabbaret Lounge record on Planet Mu, so get that one too. www.timexile.com
The Big Pink: retro 80s indie 2piece on 4AD records. you can watch a video on their website and hear more on MySpace. They're touring the UK now including ICA (23 April). www.musicfromthebigpink.com www.myspace.com/musicfromthebigpink
Soap and Skin: a young skandinavian who plays haunting electronic songs. The album is out the middle of next month, but you can pre-order on 7Digital, and you can also download a track free now: http://soapandskin.piasrecordings.com/
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs: great new single called Zero, and an album out to buy soon (already available as a dwnload) which had be released early because someone had leaked it. www.yeahyeahyeahs.com

It might seem a bit odd to be effectively reviewing albums released almost 20 years ago, but Duncan lent me some CDs for a band called Shadowlands, and I think they are worthy of mention. Because they are awful (he thinks so too). To begin this story I have to bring us forward in time to this century, and the end of the last. At his request I bought Duncan the second album by The Tyde last Christmas. Also picked up an album by Beechwood Sparks from the library which he later borrowed and we both enjoyed. Both these bands involved two brothers who were in a great late-90s band Further. They wrote short and noisy lofi songs full of dreamy distortion, they CD covers were all hand written and in some cases illegible. A pretty good mix all in all, and it is usually a good idea to check out artists' and musicians' formative early works. So we were quite surprised how un-alike Shadowlands' music is to Further; and how, well, bad it is... Their covers feature hand painted retro flowers, and poorly montaged band photos of the four of them in skinny jeans and polo necks with shoulder length floppy hair. The lyrics are all 'yeah, baby, hey hey, yeah', despite the sleeve notes referencing people like Woodie Guthrie, Hemingway, Kerouac, Tristessa. They were on the same label as Sonic Youth and Nirvana and members of the Waterboys were involved in the recordings, but the ultimate sound reminds me of late Billy Idol, Quireboys, Dogs D'Amour, all with an unhealthy slice of The Byrds and beachfire whimsy. The singing is just really bad. To be fair, fan forums, and the brothers' own web presence say how bad and misguided their early works are; how they were naive and got sucked in by the record label bods. So its okay to forgive them and continue listening to their best work. The only problem for me is that I don't think Duncan will take the CDs back.

Indie Country post-rock mega-group The National will be playing the RFH on 10 August http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/music/productions/the-national-46073

When I heard The Prodigy and Pendulum where playing Download festival I thought that the combination with some good heavy rock would make for a great event. But then I looked up the website and saw it would be paying £135 to see Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Motley Crue, Dream Theater... I now find Faith No More are reforming to play which would be amazing, but still too pricey. And I don't think my wife would forgive me missing her birthday. I must say I'm quite surprised that Mike Patton would go back, but I bet the money's good and who can blame him.

Here are some free mp3s from Tomlab records:
Asthmatic Kitty, K Records and Tomlab mixtape http://asthmatickitty.com/mp3/Rafter_SXSW_AKTomlabK.mp3
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone 'Old Panda Days w/Nick Krgovich http://www.tomlab.com/promo/tom127_track1.mp3
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone 'Optimist vs. The Silent Alarm (When The Saints Go Marching In) http://www.tomlab.com/promo/tom128_track3.mp3
Niobe 'Fever' http://www.tomlab.com/promo/tom125_track8.mp3

Go to the Hayward, and alongside the Wallinger-curated main show, and the new Annette Messenger show, there is a sound and object installation by Ujino Munetero, until 24 April
http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/visual-arts/productions/ujino-and-the-rotators-79f/?utm_campaign=email_visual&utm_source=email_visual_090217&utm_content=email_visual090217_ujino

If you like your movie adaptations of dark graphic novels, see Watchmen. http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/

Go to the Camden Arts Centre for two new contemporary artists' shows: Mircea Cantor and Liz Arnold. www.camdenartscentre.org

Chris Jones recommended this artist Dylan Martorell who creates amazing sculptures, installations and sound pieces: http://www.hiddenarchive.blogspot.com/

This Saturday coming art event/craft fair people Hunga Munga will be putting on a night at the Bethnal Green Working Mens Club called Woolworthless, themed around the lamentably demised store. www.hungamunga.co.uk

I was a bit late in getting around to listening to it, and frankly I think I needn't have bothered. I got more than half way through without even really noticing anything above muzak. There is a slight lift when the sublime Richard Hawley joins in on 'The Fix', but I think it would be better if that Badly-Drawn-Boy-and-Sting-have-an-inbred-love-child singer didn't join in. 'Some Riot' retains some interest and 'One Day Like This' is a passable Verve-gone-commercial/Oasis pastiche. But I put the radio on and hear this kind of thing.

The Estorick Collection in Islington has a show called Velocity Zero by Italian-born and New York-based artist Luca Buvoli. The exhibition aims to revisit the themes of the Italian Futurists from a present-day standpoint. Sections of the Futurist Manifesto are read out loud by people with speech difficulties to contrast with the group's values of speed and modern efficiency. Exploitative? you decide. Until 19 April, next exhibition Architecture and Photography in Italy 1930-60 www.estorickcollection.com

Endless Dreams and Water Between is an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum by Renée Green exploring material and spiritual transportation across oceans. The work consists of films, projections, sound, drawings and other media. Until 21 April www.nmm.ac.uk/newvisions

The Sea Hyun Lee exhibition Between Red previously seen at the Union Gallery is now showing at the Aspex in Portsmouth until 5 April. These obsessively detailed imagined landscapes involve disconcerting and impossible repetition, and are rendered in a kind of antique china red. www.aspex.org.uk
Sadly the Union Gallery is closing its Ewer St SE1 premises and focusing on the Teesdale Street E1 venue.

Altermodern: Tate Triennial 2009 on now at Tate Britain until 26 April. www.tate.org.uk/britain

This week is the last chance to see the show Invisible Cities at the Jerwood Space, featuring painters such as Prunella Clough and Thomas Scheibitz. www.jerwoodvisualarts.com

This Wednesday night the Camden Arts Centre is screening Polanski's sinister Parisian thriller The Tenant. www.camdenartscentre.org

Monday 9 March go to the Roxy Bar and Screen for del Toro's Cronos (1993): an atmospheric vamire tale. www.roxybarandscreen.com

Southbank have just announced that Squarepusher will be playing on 24 April as part of the Ether festival. www.southbankcentre.co.uk

21 Feb Temperatures are playing at the excellent George Tavern, Commercial Road E1, as part of a monthly event called /other/. www.myspace.com/thegeorgetavern

Is it the end of the road for Spril Architects? We are awaiting the latest on this....

Listened back to White Cliff Sands' 2nd record the other day and it was an enjoyable return. I also managed to do some more work on the 3rd album and I am fairly confident it will materialise this year. I came up with the idea for a new musical project: possibly psuedo instant trash electronica/sinister kiddy pop, possibly conceptual and no music. The name Globszo came to me from a car registratrion (GL08SZO), and possible track titles include 'Buttons were his undoing', 'Hairline Recession' and 'Coffin Trails' - thanks to New Low for this last one. It might not come to anything anytime soon, but you'll know soonest if you check back here!

The Arnolfini in Bristol is showing the first major retrospective of Angus Fairhurst from this weekend, after this important YBA-era artist sadly took his own life last year. Let's hope the show tours. http://www.arnolfini.org.uk/whatson/exhibitions/details/189

Mark Wallinger's 'The Russian Linesman' is on from 17 Feb until 4 May at the Hayward Project Space: he has curated a selection of works dealing with physical, political or metaphysical thresholds, featuring Thomas Demand, Durer, Nauman and Penone amongst others. http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/visual-arts/productions/mark-wallinger-s-the-russian-l-44420/?utm_campaign=email_visual&utm_source=email_visual090102&utm_content=email_visual090102_wallngr

Danish collective Superflex have a film called 'Flooded McDonald's' at the South London Gallery until 1 March. Yep, you've guessed it, a replica fast food chain restaurant is gradually submerged; it's supposed to be climate-change/consumerism metaphor.... http://www.southlondongallery.org/docs/exh/exhibition.jsp?id=157

Just a reminder that the Barbican's Corbusier show opens 19 Feb http://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/event-detail.asp?ID=8114

There are some great films out at the moment, like Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire; so what better reason to ignore the financial gloom and meanwhile support your local independent cinema.
The Roxy Bar and Screen has some good films on in the coming weeks: Gomorrah (highly acclaimed modern day Italian mob drama, 2 Feb), Hunger (Bobby Sands' Maze prison hunger strike, directed by artist Steve McQueen, 3 Feb), Chaplin's classic silent movie The Kid with live score by classical guitarist and composer Sebastiano Genovese (9 Feb).
Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1965) is on at the Barbican 20 Feb, featurng Donald Sutherland. http://www.barbican.org.uk/film/event-detail.asp?ID=8442

Some of the performers have been announced for this year's Ether festival on the Southbank. Names include: Brian Eno, Peaches, Royksopp, David Byrne, Mouse on Mars, CM von Hausswolff and Christian Fennesz. Full details at www.southbankcentre.co.uk/ether
Also on the Southbank, Bonny 'Prince' Billy will play 20 April; and on the same night J Spaceman (Spritualized) and Matthew Shipp reprise their Meltdown duo as Spaceshipp. 14 Feb and Bellowhead put on a 'dirty weekend'show with special guests.
http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/music/productions/a-dirty-weekend-with-bellowhea-44044/?utm_campaign=email_cont&utm_source=email_cont090128&utm_content=email_cont090128_bellowhd

12 Feb our friends at the free literary pick-up Litro are putting on an evening of spoken word called Litro Live! at Foyles café. Tickets £6/5 www.foyles.co.uk

Here's a final round up for 2008 of what's on and to come:

Seasick Steve is hosting an evening called Fok America at the Barbican on 21 Jan. We're looking foward to the Le Corbusier show at the Barbican, opening mid-Feb. 4 Jan sees a special screening of The Baader-Meinhof Complex.
www.barbican.org.uk

7 Jan, artist Nathaniel Mellors presents a special one night only event at the South London Gallery, reconstructing his installation 'The Time Surgeon' inspired by Samuel Beckett. www.southlondongallery.org

GSK Contemporary exhibition is on in the back of the RA for another few weeks, with installations, events etc. http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/gsk-contemporary-season/

Keith Coventry at Haunch of Venison until the end of Jan http://www.haunchofvenison.com/en/#page=london.current.keith_coventry

that's about it...

  Comments

1998

I saw something about My Vitriol playing somewhere (amusingly with that Suicide Slut Georgina Baillie as support - is that cynical or what?), and Faith No More reforming... obviously I'm more interested in the latter, but did I dream the last 10 years?

Artist, photographer and writer Chris Jones has released his 5th online publication called Articulates. Each page can be viewed on his website and then downloaded as a Word document for printing. Jones describes his output thus:

Generally, most of my work – writing, photography, or both – comes from working to see lightly, emotional tension, working to think lightly, and belief, then show this on the page. Specifically, Articulates, to me, is sorrow, formed in a migrant’s experiencing a city and its language. An attempt to articulate both, in the migrant’s own terms, who feels and thinks integration will not come, but believes it exists. It’s from this sorrow the pictures come.

www.lighthinking.com

Mr Teeth's new 7 track EP (at one time that'd be enough for an album [Ed.]) 'Broken Sunlight' is out now. Email us for copies.

John Korner's exhibition War Problems is on now at Victoria Miro until 24 January. www.victoria-miro.com

Go and see the animated feature film Waltz with Bashir in cinemas now. I went to see Quantum of Solace, which is not normally my kind of thing, but I quite enjoyed it; but I was surprised by how deeply melancholy it was.

13 Dec the Beatboxer Shlomo is on at the Southbank. Then on the 17th there's Teddy Thomas, Bert Jansch and Badly Drawn Boy amongst others. www.southbankcentre.co.uk

The Barbican have 'Twisted Christmas' on 11 Dec featuring Jarvis Cocker, Patrick Wolf and many others. Then on 13 Dec a special screening of the Flaming Lips' film 'Christmas on Mars' with a talk by the band's Wayne Coyne. www.barbican.co.uk

Jerwood Photography Awards on now at the Jerwood Space until 11 Dec. www.jerwoodspace.co.uk

If you're in Bristol the Kill Your Timid Notion tour hits the Arnolfini and Spike Island Tues to Thurs next week featuring experimental art, film and sound. And on Wednesday there is a talk from Jamie Shovlin. www.arnolfini.org.uk

Gigs coming up: Cradle of Filth 1 Dec The Forum Slipknot / Machine Head 3 Dec Hammersmith Apollo (I think I woke up in the shower) Wildhearts 10 Dec Hammersmith Apollo (ditto above) Sick of It All 11 Dec The Forum (my fingers form a bull horn as I type) Manu Chao 16 Dec The Forum The Wedding Present 18 Dec The Forum

These people from Israel representing a centre called MOBY emailed me out of the blue hoping I'd plug their call for submissions for an exhibition called Factory. So despite political reservations but in a spirit of openness, here's the link http://mobyinfo.googlepages.com/home. But do't blame me if there's anything dodgy about it; like I said, it was out of the blue.

The building is a new office block with the art installed in the offices on several levels around a central atrium. From the balconies it will be possible for visitors to look down on the performances taking place in the foyer below. The opening hours of the show are 12-7pm and the performances are taking place throughout the afternoon and evening. So it all sounds very interesting, and it reminds of a post-uni job I briefly had: suspended on a safety wire, watering the plants which hang down from balconies in this kind of office building. But that's another story....

  Comments

Duncan Ward performance

This is the flyer for Duncan Ward's performance on Saturday. Please note that the title is actually If You Can't Close This Door Don't Open It; a subtle difference you might argue, but shows I didn't get it wrong on the website, and obviously important to those involved. So wander along to Angel/Old Street area and see Duncan in action, as well as all the others.

Also this weekend the Serpentine Gallery are holding a two-day Manifesto Marathon in the Frank Gehry Pavilion before its dismantled.
www.serpentinegallery.org
Other Exhibitions: Guillermo Kuitca at Hauser & Wirth until 8 Nov. www.hauserwirth.com
Rothko at Tate Modern and Bacon and Turner Prize at Tate Britain www.tate.org.uk
I went to the Design Museum's show Design Cities, which was quite small but interesting to see the development of modernism in design, especially Arts & Crafts to Bauhaus. My favourite thing, though, was the folded cardboard display panels: recyclable exhibition design is truly the future!
www.designmuseum.org

We have however recently played www.junkyardshow.com where Cool Banana transformed the Milton Arms Barn into an array of drapes, camo-nets, umbrellas and projections for what was top night of live music and DJ’s details of which are elsewhere on these pages.

It was our first full gig performed as an instrumental six piece since having parted company with our vocalist (cheers Spiral Dan for your support and being very much part of Spiral Architects history). This leaves us room to “develop our musical shit” even further and it seemed to go really well with a lot of positive reaction and feedback from the crowd which was great, as was the Cool Banana set – check them out at www.cool-banana.com and follow other links.

On the back of this there will be another gig with Cool Banana at our home of the Fawcett on 8th November, as well as playing the Alma Arms on the 17th Oct (details of which TBC).

Fawcett Inn - Talking of the pub, Johnny and Matt have now launched the new site www.fawcettmade.com where within the archive section you can still search for past www.somefoolwitha.com/fawcett recordings (just do a search for Spiral Architects for example!). Also please do check out the Emergence set which has recently been posted as this was an amazing set from the India based group – and features Spirals/CB’s Nick on horns.

Mr Teeth - In other news, I have decided to go ahead and make my new demo the “Darkened Sunlight EP” available to those who may want a copy and a future version with extra production/recording is also possibly in the pipeline.

Ben recently provided CD’s of old negativePANDA recordings so I intend to get round to adding my input shortly so hopefully we can release that in the near future. It’s been interesting and exciting listening to recordings that go back a good number of years and many of the nostalgic lo-fi sounds are still highly enjoyable.

I also wonder how production is going on WCS3…

Any way recently I attended Glasvegas at the www.wedgewood-rooms.co.uk who although not as raw, had the whole Jesus and Mary Chain, early BRMC etc vibe going on and were really enjoyable to watch and listen too… less can be said for support (Madskulls) who were a poor mans Stone Roses… the Roses were awesome though, it has to be said and I enjoyed digging out the best of as a result.

Other gigs over the next couple of months to attend in Portsmouth/Southampton include:

Seasick Steve – Southampton Guildhall may lose the intimacy but still I’m sure this old blues hobo is going to put on a great show.

Motorhead – Southampton Guildhall - new album is nothing groundbreaking but still damn great rock n roll which I can’t stop listening to, amazing that they’ve still got it after all these years and live…. well you know the score.

Datsuns – not heard the new album yet, but if like me you’re into your rock n roll from down under you know what to expect! I have my ticket for the Wedgewood Rooms.

Spiritualized - “Songs in A and E” is out now and like recent offerings is again quite stripped down but still very much in keeping with earlier Jason Spaceman recordings, and with the gig having been moved from the spacious Pyramids to the Wedge it is a must go to for me.

Oh and I’ve just been passed a copy of an Infected Mushroom CD which I look forward to listening to… but for now I must do something else.

Like a funky, loungey, latin version of Dylan with some sinister-sounding subject matter, there was no sleeve, no information, no track titles; all we knew at the time (and I'm pretty sure Wikipedia wasn't about then) was there was some connection with South Africa.
He was more or less forgotten by me until I chanced upon a review of a record called Cold Fact by an ex-teacher of Mexican parents, Sixto Rodgriguez from Detroit. The track titles corresponded with my recollection of the lyrics: Sugar Man (as sampled by David Holmes), Forget It, I Wonder. There is a Motown influence, not just in that he's from Motor City, but also through those handling the backing music and production. This was his debut album from 1970 and then he disappeared from the scene going back to the class room and other jobs. But his South African following grew underground through the 80s until his was tracked down for a sell-out tour in 1998. This reissue goes back to the original master tapes and there are limited editions with signed posters, full colour booklet etc. http://www.lightintheattic.net/releases/rodriguez/

Some might consider punk rock a disability enough, but check out and be won over by Heavy Load who are playing the ICA on 1 Oct. The documentary film about the last two years of their development is out on 3 Oct. www.heavyloadthemovie.com

Permanently tired from lack of sleep and the constant requirements for stimulation, I am also immersed in childish activities, toys and fascinations. The late nights have found me watching popular music on TV (which sometimes paradoxically makes me feel old because it all sounds the same as something that's already been done, blah blah...), time at home listening to the hits on the radio, days out visiting exhibitions; not a lot of time for reading but keeping up to date with the news etc.

We recently took a ferry trip to Northern France and spent some time with my parents. Whilst there we did some day trips out which included visiting the Scriptorial of Avranches. This houses the ancient documents of the Mont St Michel monks, and currently a nice but patchy Marc Chagal exhibition. My favourite thing was the modern concrete and glass architecture within the ancient castle walls which made for great flow around the museum.

My playlist for the driving included Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire and Biffy Clyro - Mountains (two bands I've never really had much interest in before); Glasvegas - Daddy's Gone; Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal; Kooks - Shine On; Coldplay - Viva La Vida; Noah and the Whale - 5 Years Time; and Keane - Spiralling. On the latter, I never paid any attention to Keane, can't recall anything they've done before. And when I first heard this single I did'nt really rate it. But like good pop music it has eaten its way into my consciousness, with its slick 80s sound. In particular the lyrics sound to me like they're talking about the spiralling, unfathomable process of love, life and death, and destruction; the apocalypse, the revelation, the destruction and creation. Impressive stuff for the charts.

Currently also loving the Tilly and the Wall single 'Beat Control' which Radio 1 will no doubt play to death until we're sick of it. Had enough of Verve, although that happened a short while before Bittersweet Symphony....

New Streets album out on this week. He played a new song on the Jonathan Ross show the other week, something about 'heaven for the weather and hell for the company'. It wasn't bad but he looked pretty miserable (or perhaps that was just Street bravado). I'm still undecided about the current single 'Everything is borrowed', but it is growing on me a bit. Wondering where the energy has gone, seems all a bit introspective. He was interviewed by Jo Whiley on Radio 1 and the idea behind this record is that its more about big issues and less about daily life. From his perspective no one was doing that when he started out, and now everyone's copied him, and anyway he wants to do something new. Which is fair enough I guess. He seemed to be having a bit of a laugh with Jo so I wouldn't necessarily take this without salt, but he was saying he'd do one more album as The Streets, a more electronic affair, before embarking in new musical direction. Sounds a bit Damon Albarn really.

Next weekend there's a show at the ICA which has toured the country called Approximately Infinite Universe, featuring American and Finnish artists together: Kemialliset Ystavat & Axolotl, Es & Fursaxa, Islaja, Blevin Blechtum and others. 27 Sept http://www.no-signal.net/aiu

10 Oct sees Chuck D doing spoken word at the Southbank's Purcell Room.
http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/literature-spoken-word/productions/chuck-d-42804
Also on the Southbank that day is US indie-country oldskooler Juliana Hatfield playing songs from her new album.
http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/music/productions/juliana-hatfield-42403

The Wire magazine are presenting a couple of nights of music in various venues in the East End 2-3 Oct. Names include Kimmo Pohjonen, Bass Clef, Kim Hiorthoy, Vadislav Delay. http://www.concreteandglass.co.uk

Jazz and Funk fans should check out Plumstead Radical Club's music at www.impossibleark.com

Whitechapel nights include: Red Velvet Curtain Cult on Friday; and Here: Radical Animation Now on Sunday and Monday www.whitechapel.org

Portsmouth-based artist Jon Adams' work Word Wall is on display now at London Bridge station. He's also riding on a bus around Pompey (yes right now), getting people interested in art. Jon's work is inspired by Dubuffet in terms of being hidden away in unexpected places, and he is also fascinated with maps, diagrams and systems.

Projektor Film Fest is on now at the Café Gallery in Southwark Park until Sunday http://www.cafegalleryprojects.com/pdf/2008_Projektor_Colour.pdf

The Hayward Gallery has an interesting Warhol exhibition coming up. Described as a fresh perspective, focusing on his comerciality and integration in popular culture, it opens 7 Oct and runs until 18 Jan 09. http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/visual-arts/productions/andy-warhol-other-voices-oth-41967

Roy Voss' exhibition Pine is on now at Matt's Gallery until 2 Nov. His work features assisted readymades, installations and wallpaper, exploring the natural and artificial. http://www.mattsgallery.org/artists/voss/exhibition-1.php

Rick Buckley's exhibition Facets of Reason is on now at Union Gallery Ewer Street, featuring works on paper which explore man's dark, melancholic interior. http://www.union-gallery.com/

Tony Oursler is on at Lisson Gallery until 3 Oct. www.lissongallery.com

And this weekend is London Open House, so go out to stay inside!

Where to begin…

I have recently been introduced to www.watch-movies.net where I have so far seen two movies for free, that’s right ladies and gentlemen you too can watch movies for free. Ok, it’s basically a youtube kinda site purely for films and by all accounts works pretty darn well.

The first I had taken to watching was “Last Days” which unfortunately didn’t get me as excited as the website upon I was watching it. Michael Pitt stars in what I can only describe as a painful 1hr and 40 minutes, the premise of Last Days is the downfall of a jaded drug addicted rock star who is basically representing the last days of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain (although for the purpose of the film the look alike is merely coincidental).

I think the first approximately 30 minutes has no dialogue, it may have been longer and I had fallen asleep who knows, instead it follows the Cobain like statue of a depressed man wondering around not doing much. When dialogue finally kicks in you start to realise why they left it so long for the words are few and far between, and leaving something to be desired… then eventually some rather moving footage of Kurt (sorry, “Blake“) performing a solo track which rightly or wrongly reminded me of Where Did You Sleep Last Night… oh and then he kills himself.

After this I watched the more light hearted “A Mighty Wind”, this I had got very excited about seeing for I had wished to have seen it for many a year. It is Spinal Tap meets Waiting for Guffman and Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean all appear so it’s got off to a good start in my book.

Producer Irving Steinbloom had passed away leaving his children to organise a tribute concert in his name, a fairly simple plot enabling us to explore the trials and tribulations of the three main acts involved. The first of which being The Folksmen, who take the opportunity to make a comeback and are most famous for their only hit “Old Joe’s Place”… lyrically all this and their other songs are very daft, but musically you’d be none the wiser as to their integrity (as with Spinal Tap).

Next up are the Main Street Singers a nine piece who in my mind are reminiscent of real life folk group the Carter Family, their manager a self styled comedian famed for coining the phrase “Wha’ Happened” which to be fair I probably found far more funny than I probably should have done (think “is he ‘avin a laff” from Ricky Gervaise Extras).

Then thirdly we have Mitch n Mickey whose initial relationship is most easily related to that of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Johnny Cash and June Carter or Sonny Bono and Cher, and therefore an obvious focal point for the highlight of the evening concert (I started almost believing the whole thing was for real!). Mitch Cohen (played by Eugene Levy) had become an emotional wreck and although it is unclear as to if he will… he does pull through to provide the performance the crowd were there to see - including the kiss that had caused so much tension during a particular song, but was almost as important to the history of make belief folk as that of when Dylan plugged in his electric guitar in real life albeit for different reasons.

So yeah, the mockumentary approach similar to that of the aforementioned Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman was a perfect way to explore the fictitious world of three very different made up folk acts and having discovered it is available to buy from play.com for merely £3.99 it will be one I shall purchase for sure.

…and on that note, it leads me on to where to end, for now I think this is it.

Good night readers.

  Comments

Late night listener

I caught a bit of BBC Three coverage of Reading and Leeds over the weekend: I was up in the early hours trying to get the boy back to sleep, which is probably why I just typed Kedds (as in Senseless Things) instead of Leeds. High point was seeing The Enemy, and Cajun Dance Party were pretty good too, if a little too affected. - Why did it work for Morrissey but looks so lame on anyone else? - Low point was Feeder: I really don't get why this run of the mill rock band are still around when so many better ones have fallen by the wayside. There were lots of young kids doing bull horn signs without being ironic, so I guess somewhere there lies the answer.

I shouldn't like Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' but somehow I do. And I think it would mix well into Sam Sparrow's 'Black and Gold'. I finally got around to watching Duncan's Jack Smith DVD. Maybe I'll even get to see the Rear Window DVD I got from the library the other week.

Still thinking about festivals, the End of the Road festival in North Dorset sounds good - limited to 5000 tickets and featuring the likes of Mercury Rev, Calexico, Tindersticks, Low, British Sea Power (UK budget Arcade Fire, but still worth seeing), American Music Clu, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Billy Childish, Akron/Family, Laura Marling and numerous others alongside trade stalls, cinema, comedy, kids and family stuff etc etc
12 - 14 Sept www.endoftheroadfestival.com

Sat 1 - Sun 9 Sept is KLANG: a tribute to the late Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Southbank. Also there (11 Oct) is a tribute to Nico - artists TBC - and Julian Cope (18 Nov) supporting his new album 'Black Sheep'. 24 Oct is Video Games Live at the Southbank: live orchestra and musicians perform with interactive game play and state of the art graphics. And on 24 Sept Dr Ben Goldacre, from the Guardian's Bad Science column will be speaking.
www.southbankcentre.co.uk

Mr Teeth mentioned Tilly and the Wall before, and they're playing ULU on Sat 25 Oct. www.tillyandthewall.com

Coming up at the Barbican this autumn are New York No Wavers Liquid Liquid plus some others from Domino Records (4 Oct). Domino are celebrating their crystal anniversary (15 years) and are putting on this event along with Tricky (6 Oct) and Juana Molina + Max Tundra (5 Oct at the LSO St Luke's).
www.barbican.org.uk www.dominorecordco.com
Juana Molina is also playing Bush Hall on 28 Oct www.juanamolina.com

the Whitechapel have a open screening night for film-makers on 4 Sept, and the following night is It's About Time: a music night featuring acts 'with a fresh take on rhythm'. www.whitechapel.org

Simon Bookish's long awaited album is due to be released on Tomlab on the 7th of October. Called 'Everything/Everything', it's a departure from his earlier glitchy electro work, employing his impressive compositional skills into a big band song cycle which takes in 'everything' from minimalism to disco, ambient and cabaret. He's also one of the best lyricists around in my opinion, so I shall look forward to that one coming out. www.simonbookish.com
Also on Tomlab is Why? (Yoni Wolf from Anticon/Cloudead) and he's touring Europe: mainly Germany and France, but just one date in Dublin (1 Nov). http://www.anticon.com/index.php?section=artist&target=Why&js=yes

See some exclusive drawings by Daniel Johnston at The Wire website. Also download some great noise/avant garde performances from Fag Tapes.
www.thewire.co.uk

Next Friday (5 Sept) is Late at Tate Britain, curated by Martin Creed whose current piece has people jogging through the Duveen galleries. On the night there will be live music and short films. http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/eventseducation/lateattatebritain/lateattatebritainseptember2008.htm

next week an exhibition of the work of Udomsak Krisanamis opens at the Victoria Miro gallery and runs until 27 Sept. PV next Tues 6-8pm. The work is a mixture of densely layered collagey-paintings, some film installations and large sculptures, arranged in three zones. www.victoria-miro.com
