It's been a few years since I've seen them but I would love to do so again. Glad you enjoyed it.

Black Ice is perhaps their best studio album for a very long time too.
Emergence, check them out as they played a Glastonbury warm up show at the Fawcett last Thursday which blew me away. Having arrived from a small farm in India it was half the bands first time in England and they had the best violinist ever, whilst combining amazing indian vocals with english lyrics and story telling. Nick (Spirals etc) also joined them on horns. www.emergencemusic.org
Not today.

I didn't recognise those film-makers names, unfortunately, but I supspect it will be a fascinating show, especially with the guest speakers you have. I'll look up lux, thanks for the link.

I've heard lots of Lustmord, and never anything bad, but I'd struggle to think of any of the names. He has done recordings in caves and abattoirs for the ambience, which is a fabulous idea.

Hi Tom,

The screening will involve a series of shorts from: Guy Sherwin, Margaret Tait, Jeff Keen and a whole bunch of others.
I'm not familiar with this sort of thing, so there are no names I recognise unfortunately.
The films are all being taken from Lux(www.lux.org.uk)so I guess these films can be seen there normally.

I shall definitely look into getting more Lustmord. Sounds right up my street.

In response to:No title. Not today.

What film are they showing, do you know?

Lustmord (Brian Williams) has been a very innovative musician for about 25 years now. He was one of the pioneers of the dark side of ambient music, after Brian Eno. Everything I've heard by him, I've liked.

Puscifer was a new name on me and I've just looked them up and they sound interesting too. Thanks for the recommendation!

Cheers, Tom.

In response to:Spiral Architects

Cheers for the comments Ben glad you're liking it.
You and a gig in Clapham on a Friday night... mmm, it's certainly sounds do-able so will let you know!

As for ours if you did manage it you know there's a place to sleep, but I appreciate the baby duties so hopefully between us there will be plenty more performances in the future!
I know everyone always wants to compare things, but i'm going to have to say Mr Bungle, Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Sisters of Mercy, Roxy Music, Bauhaus....?

Would love to come to your gig but I don't think I'll get a baby visa.

In response to:(A Dog Barks) at the Roxy

An awesome night! I think they liked it, but even if they didn't I wouldn't take that as a reason not to buy it.

Did you mean to say Debstep?

In response to:New life

Once again Ben, congratulations to yourself and to Rachael, and I hope your first Xmas with Isaac was enjoyed by all.
I had hoped to be writing about my visit to Milan here but rather typically I messed things up and so didn't manage to go in the end.
I've just taken a look at Duncan's performance. Would've been great to come up and see that, but maybe next time eh? What with Keith doing his music now, I feel like I ought to be doing something as well.
You mention this years ATP festivals. I was talking about this the other day - I think my brother plans to go to the Pitchfork one at Camber Sands. I'd love to go again, but there isn't really anything in the line up that interests me to be honest. I used to rather like Glass Candy, but from what I can make out they've gone a bit disco now. This would normally be a good thing, but it's not really what they do best, in my opinion.
Oh, and from your mention of 'Debstep' I'm reminded of a record I saw recently by Venetian Snares. I can't remember the title, but it was described as 'doomstep' which caught my attention I have to say. Ring any bells with you?
Hope you're well mate. Take care.
Originally planned to be a b-side to the 'All My Friends' single, it's now available as one side of a split 7" with Arcade Fire. Unfortunately though it looks like it might be rather tricky to get hold of unless you're willing to pay up to £50 for a copy off e-bay!!

In response to:Monday

hello saneman,

thought i'd drop in a few words about lynch's latest.

inland empire, a modern mash-derpiece. peppered with treasure from lynch's dark oeuvre - the brunette from mulholland; laura dem's husband, ben harper; dark, lengthy corridor scenes; muted palettes; the coffee and cigarettes; the weird animals and groteque close-ups... - this epic is akin to miniaturizing oneself to paint-fleck size before wandering over a big auerbach after closing.

lynch has with i.e. created cinema on his own terms - including all those listed above. with repetition, multiple characters given one actor, and it seems an intuited screenplay, lynch is with such terms fusing a mistyness; a menace; and most importantly, an overlapping, into conventions of cinematic time and space, (including all the altman-eque multi-narratives hackneyed by bad-hollywood). that it is three hours long is thus irrelevant.

interesting too is lynch's phenomenology: he deals with the psychology of characters in terms of their surface and actions, as would a painter like hopper or manet; or the painter lynch is. there is no fictive mind of the character here as the mind is the cinema itself.

i.e. is then a delicious, disturbing mesh of tarkovsky, faulkner, this mortal coil, watchable only in a small, decrepit art-cinema. (i saw it openinig night at one of seoul's few art cinemas, with only the projectionist in attendance. perfect.) it feels beyond criticism - that point to which all art must get for rothko - and is a honed, perfectly drawn, misty, dark-green-purple, menacing formalist epic. best seen alone, in a seoul mind.
